Day 31

Your Path Ends Here

The end, everything you’ve spent rendered null
Regardless of whether you’re tethered to hope
That there’s a shiny high place the kind souls go
Or if it all goes dark as we harken to the smoke—
From nothing to nothing, like the cigarette burning,
With butt and body the reminder of a once deserving,
Once breathing husk of a being, short and bright
Whether weak or mighty equal at midnight—
Those left behind stand seething in anger or sadness
At chaos that was always our status:
For only humans invented an escape from the madness
A goal, expending life to depend on happy endings
But you will, as the rest, face your rending
Of mind and body. One must die and the other
A sign, a symbol of every folly and flaw and brother
To some, father to many, and to someone, somewhere, far off
A new beginning.
For our minds are unique to each of us,
But our bodies are many.
